The UPC has planned the start of the 2020–2021 academic year and has approved a range of initiatives to adapt activities to new needs The Governing Council of the UPC has approved a document that specifies a face-to-face teaching model that is also flexible and hybrid for the first semester of the upcoming academic year, depending on the demands of the pandemic and the requirements of studies. The UPC will prioritise first-year undergraduate students and mainly face-to-face academic activities, such as laboratory activities, clinical and field practicals and some assessments. Braun investigate new inactivation strategies against SARS-CoV-2 virus through modified nanoparticles and activation of heat nanosources The research group Innovation in Materials and Molecular Engineering - Biomaterials for Regenerative Therapies (IMEM) of the UPC will investigate, in collaboration with B. Braun, the detection, blocking and elimination of the SARS-CoV-2 virus using modified nanoparticles and activation of nanosources of heat. This inherited neuromuscular disorder affects one in 3,500 children worldwide. It causes the progressive loss of muscle function and therefore leads to progressive disability. Rector's statement posted on 3 June 2020 The Rector of the UPC, Francesc Torres, has said in a new video statement addressed to the university community that face-to-face teaching will be resumed gradually and that students will be able to begin work placements from 8 June onwards. The coming academic year is being planned with face-to-face activity. In addition, bachelor's and master's degree students are being consulted regarding the exceptional distance teaching during this past term. Answers can be submitted until 7 June. During the state of alarm the UPC will not suspend student rights in the event of non-payment of enrolment fees or add any late payment charges Students may submit a reasoned request to delay payment of outstanding enrolment fees, which will be responded to considering the reasons stated. UPC’s plan for ending the lockdown approved The UPC's Governing Council on 14 May has approved the plan for ending the lockdown and progressively reinstating face-to-face activities on UPC campuses. The four-stage plan will be adapted to the evolution of the pandemic and health authorities’ advice. From 19 June, all UPC campuses are in the stage of Resuming Normality. The UPC enters stage 1 of the lockdown ending All UPC campuses and the campuses of the other universities in Catalonia will be able to carry out those activities provided for in stage 1 of the plan for ending the lockdown from 18 May, according to the ministerial decree published on 16 May by the Ministry of Health. The percentage of COVID-19 cases diagnosed in Spain rises to nearly 10% of the population infected A multidisciplinary research group of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) and the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP) has analysed the diagnostic delay between the development of symptoms of COVID-19 and the registration of a positive case in ten countries in the European Union. It was the largest beam tested to rupture in a European laboratory On 29 January, the construction laboratory of the Center for Technological Innovation in Construction and Civil Engineering (CITEEC) conducted a controlled rupture test on a beam 12 meters long, 2 meters wide and 24 centimetres thick that weighed 14 tonnes. Researchers at the UPC and the IGTP use mathematical models to evaluate the evolution of the COVID-19 epidemic and the effectiveness of the control measures A team of researchers from the UPC’s Computational Biology and Complex Systems Group (BIOCOM-SC) and the Comparative Medicine and Bioimage Centre of Catalonia (CMCiB) of the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP) has developed a mathematical model to monitor the epidemic of COVID-19 with the support of La Caixa Foundation. The report that they have produced for the European Union Strategy Office is updated every day and includes predictions for Catalonia, Spain and the European Union.
